Terrariums: How to plant inside closed wine bottle in Malaysia Equatorial Climate

Plant inside a used glass bottle and seal it OFF! Guess how much it cost me to do this Terrariums ?
Cost me RM0, because all the items I used were readily available in home. No need to go out to buy anything.

Okay, I lied, you probably need few of the critical components. Here, let me explain what you need and why you need it. Probably could just go to nearest park and get some of the items for free.

For this, we need :
  1. Some charcoal, any dark brown soil, any black soil, and some pebbles (optional).
  2. Moss or Fern type of plant (Malaysia - Paku Pakis)
  3. Empty glass bottle with a cork to seal it
  4. Wire for positioning the plant & cleaning
  5. Cotton or small clothes for cleaning

Soil
 - Soil that ideal for a closed jar/bottle would be a combination of soil of black and brown. Black soil usually contains a lot of nutrient for plant (more organic material), and brown soil contains less (but less acidic than black soil). Combination of both would be ideal for closed environment as it is balanced for the plant to survive long. A little bit of charcoal is needed to absorb, retains water, and charcoal is also high in carbon content which is good for plant.
  • Hint: When you choosing the type of plant to be planted inside closed bottle, pay attention to the surrounding and the soil that the plant currently on. This will give you a good idea on type of the soil needed for the plant.

Choosing a suitable type of plant
- The closed environment of bottle will be humid due to the by-product of plant. Additionally, the circulation of air inside will probably result in some condensation near the glass wall. A suitable plant would be plant that can live in humid environment, yet the plant could survive in harsh environment. Here, I would suggest looking at nearby lake side or pond. A fern type of plant & moss would be the ideal plant for closed environment. Fern (Paku Pakis) is very resilient and it grows almost everywhere in Malaysia (equatorial climate). There are many type of moss, but for our hot climates, I would suggest looking for moss that grew beside the lake. I get both of my plant from my father small fish pond. See in video of how I get it. So, you can probably just go to the nearby lake park (taman tasik) and get some moss. Save you some $$.
  • Hint:You may need to cultivate your moss before putting into the bottle.

Other Items:
- Any glass container or glass bottle would be suitable. It is up to your preferences. You need a small steel wire for inserting and positioning the plant inside your bottle.
